英國副首相剋萊格(Nick Clegg)與首相卡梅倫針鋒相對,警告英國不應考慮退出歐盟。據周二(10月8日)透露的一份演講稿,這位自民黨籍人士批評說,卡梅倫關於由全民公決英國是否留在歐盟內的建議是為使保守黨在歐洲問題上保持一致,這一企圖注定會失敗。出於黨內壓力,卡梅倫今年年初出人意料地宣佈,將在2015年英國國會選舉結束後舉行全民公投,決定英國是否應退出歐盟。克萊格嚴厲抨擊說,卡梅倫的這一宣佈已引發連鎖反應,有可能導致英國離開歐盟。克萊格稱,卡梅倫此舉是一種短視的政治算計,是一種玩火行為,將損害國家利益。克萊格強調,對英國而言,退出歐盟無異於「經濟自殺」。
