It was the towering seat of Byzantine Christianity for 900 years and the seat of the Islamic world for 500 more. Nowadays, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul attracts millions of visitors each year. But a growing grassroots Islamic movement wants the Hagia Sophia museum turned back into a mosque. The campaign is a sign of the rising strength of Islamist politics in Turkey.
