Summers in the Greek capital are becoming increasingly hot and dry – the risk of wildfires rises year by year. Surrounded by forested hillsides and bordering by the sea, the Greek capital sits in a climate and fire trap, researchers say.
Nevertheless, the city is trying as best it can to prepare for the next wildfire disaster with more volunteer fire brigades, drone surveillance, and predictive modeling. However, these measures do not solve the underlying problem.
