Qatar, a tiny Gulf state with just 300,000 citizens, has built global influence by mediating conflicts far beyond its borders. Backed by fossil fuel wealth and political stability, it hosts both Hamas leaders and a major US airbase.

Its strategy of engaging all sides, rivals and allies alike, has made it indispensable in diplomacy, but also drawn scrutiny, from EU bribery scandals to intelligence leaks in Israel.
