The waltz was based on the Ländler, a folk dance scorned by upper class Austrians. Born on the outskirts of Vienna in 1825, Johann Strauss II composed over 500 waltzes, polkas and other kinds of dance music. This earned him the name "The Waltz King."

Strauss' waltz "The Blue Danube" is considered to be one of the most iconic melodies of the 19th century. The Vienna Opera Ball, the highlight of Austria's ball season, has long been one of the country's most famous and glamorous events. Every year, around 160 couples are chosen to open the ball. These debutantes dance to a set choreography and must audition and attend rehearsals to take part.
