Who is Germany's would-be chancellor, Friedrich Merz?

CDU leader Friedrich Merz is set to be elected as German chancellor on Tuesday. His government will be facing a long list of challenges, including modernization of Germany's economy and dealing with the threat to European security posed by Russia.
