What if African countries integrated their economies?

July 24, 2025

Africa's 54 countries have 20% of the global population but under 3% of global GDP. But demographic growth means it has vast potential. By 2075 one third of the global population will be Africa – although the continent faces a range of challenges.

Africa’s Demographic Boom: A Global Opportunity or a Missed Chance?

As global power shifts and economies face uncertainty, Africa is emerging as a key player in the 21st century. With the world aging, Africa’s youthful population stands out. By 2030, half of all new workers will come from Africa. By 2075, one in three people on Earth will live there. This demographic boom presents a unique opportunity for economic growth and global influence—but only if African nations can overcome structural challenges.

Economic Transformation Depends on Unity and Innovation

Despite making up nearly 20% of the global population, Africa contributes less than 3% to global GDP. One major barrier is the continent’s low internal trade—just 13–16% of total trade happens between African countries. Experts stress the need for regional integration and value-added production. Countries like Uganda and Botswana are now processing raw materials locally to create jobs and retain wealth. This shift is vital for addressing youth unemployment in Africa, where 60% of the population is under 25.

Jobs, Governance, and the Future of Africa’s Youth

Africa’s young population could drive prosperity—or unrest if job creation fails. Governance issues, corruption, and a disconnect between aging leaders and young citizens remain major obstacles. But there is hope. With strategic investment in education, industry, and food security, Africa can transform its demographic advantage into sustainable growth. The world needs a strong Africa—economically, politically, and socially—more than ever before.
