US president George W Bush has assured Afghan president Hamid Karzai that Washington will stand by Afghanistan, despite the approaching transition of power in the White House. On Monday Bush arrived in Afghanistan under the cover of darkness on a previously unannouced tour. He had come from Baghdad.. where is visit was marred by an emphatic protest by an Iraqi journalist. His trip to Kabul passed without incident.
