Ukraine faces agricultural crisis as locusts destroy crops

In Ukraine, a plague of locusts is threatening sunflowers and other crops. Ukraine says the Russian invasion is partly to blame, with the war making pest control impossible. Farmers in the Zaporizhzhia region say the swarms have already destroyed a third of their sunflowers.

A locust invasion is ravaging southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, destroying crops in what's often called Europe's breadbasket. Farmers report swarms blanketing fields, with up to 30% of the sunflower harvest lost. Experts blame high temperatures and the war with Russia, which has disrupted bird populations and made crop spraying near frontlines impossible. Officials are calling it an environmental crisis — another consequence of Russia's ongoing invasion.
