One of the world's longest insurgencies could be drawing to a close.

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) began laying down and burning its weapons during a symbolic ceremony in neighboring Iraq. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has not said if any concessions were made to the PKK for laying down their weapons. Still, he praised the disarmament, calling it the end of a painful chapter in the nation's history. But for the families of the deceased, the pain endures. Ayşe Tutmaz and Aysel Gürel both lost loved ones on opposing sides of the conflict. Though they are hopeful that the violence will end, there's also a deep sense of mistrust between the Kurds and Turks that peace will prevail.
