Car Hijinks Confusion

DW Staff (jc)May 30, 2007

A woman in the Northern German city of Bremen thought she was witnessing a felony, when she saw a man stuff another man in the trunk of his car and drive off. But things were not what they seemed.

It was a scene familiar from movies like Goodfellas and Jackie Brown, as well as countless episodes of The Sopranos. Normally when someone gets stuffed in the trunk of car, he doesn't survive the trip.

That, at least, was what the woman from Bremen thought, when she called the local police last week to report a sinister-looking abduction.

The authorities immediately put out an all-points bulletin, hoping to save the unfortunate abductee from a looming ice-pick or baseball bat on a deserted country road. But when officers located the vehicle and opened the trunk, they found not a cowering victim, but a conscientious mechanic.

The driver, it turned out, had taken his car to a garage, complaining about a mysterious rattling in the rear of the vehicle. To determine the cause of the noise, the mechanic agreed to climb in with the spare tire, the jack and the first-aid kit, while the car's owner took it out for a spin.

Now that's what DW-WORLD.DE calls going the extra mile for a customer!
