The Kaliningrad region is the westernmost part of Russia. Without a land connection to the rest of the country, it is an exclave, surrounded by NATO members. During the Cold War, Kaliningrad was a Soviet military center and one of the most militarized spots in the world. Today it is regaining its status as a Russian bastion.
