To photographers the internet is at once a curse and a blessing. It can serve as a global advertizing platform or as a means for popular images to be disseminated millions of times over, without their creators ever seeing a red cent in royalties.

The Internet has fundamentally changed the photographer’s profession. Anyone can use it to disseminate images with virtually no loss of quality. And most often, users don’t seem to realize they are infringing on the photographer’s rights. A uniform and workable copyright code that reflects the realities of the digital age has yet to be drafted. Shift looks at the ways German photographers protect their work from piracy, intentional or not.
