Thailand appoints third new prime minister in two years

September 5, 2025

Thailand's parliament has confirmed Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister with 311 votes out of 492, but royal approval is still needed before he can assume office. Anutin is inheriting a struggling economy, record household debt, and a fragile truce with neighbor Cambodia.

Thailand's political landscape has shifted again with the designation of Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister — the third in two years.

A seasoned politician and leader of the centrist Bhumjaithai Party, Anutin rose to power after Paetongtarn Shinawatra was ousted over a leaked phone call.

Although Anutin has promised reform and early elections, he faces major challenges, including economic strain, border tensions with Cambodia, and the need for royal approval.
