Starvation looms in besieged Sudanese city

August 6, 2025

In Sudan, hundreds of thousands of people face severe hunger due to a blockade that has cut off humanitarian access and food supplies for over a year. In April 2024, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces imposed a siege on El Fasher, in a bid to take the city from Sudan's army. Many residents fleeing El Fasher have sought shelter in Tawila, where some aid is avaliable.

El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, is at the heart of Sudan's brutal two-year conflictbetween the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Hundreds of thousands are trapped, surviving on animal feed as food and aid run out. Nearby Tawila is overwhelmed by displaced families, facing floods, cholera, and continued violence. Witnesses recount looting, rape, and killings. With roads blocked and no safe exit, famine looms over those still trapped.
