Somalia's camel milk revolution helps boost health, jobs

Somalia is home to more than 7 million camels, with the animals long playing a vital role in the country's culture and folklore. Now, these humped beasts are being credited with improving health and boosting jobs — all thanks to a growing industry steeped in tradition.

Modern camel milk production is transforming agriculture in Somalia. On the outskirts of Mogadishu, farms using advanced veterinary care now yield up to 10 liters (about 2.6 gallons) of milk per camel daily — twice the traditional amount. Some is processed into camel milk yogurt, rich in calcium, magnesium, and probiotics.

Backed by the Somali government, this growing sector aims to fight malnutrition and boost the economy.
