A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering 6-meter tsunami waves and damaging buildings and power infrastructure. In Kamchatka, a kindergarten facade collapsed, but no injuries were reported. The quake’s effects rippled across the Pacific: nearly 2 million people were evacuated in Japan, where waves up to 60 cm were recorded. Hawaii issued warnings for 3-meter waves, causing traffic gridlock, though no damage occurred. Alerts remain active in parts of the Pacific.
