Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was seriously injured in a car accident near Manchester, New Hampshire, on Saturday evening, according to a statement from his security team.

Writing on X, head of security Michael Ragusa, said Giuliani's rented vehicle had been "struck from behind at high speed."

Ragusa said Giuliani, who is 81 years old, had been "transported to a nearby trauma center where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg."

"He sustained injuries but is in good spirits and recovering tremendously," Ragusa said in a subsequent post, adding: "This was not a targeted attack."

Crash has nothing to do with separate incident earlier in the day

Ragusa wrote that the crash had nothing to do with an earlier separate incident in which Giuliani had reportedly been "flagged down by a woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident."

Giuliani is said to have offered assistance, calling 9/11 and waiting for police to arrive at the scene to help the woman.

Giuliani's son Andrew later took to social media, writing, "Thank you to all the people that have reached out since learning the news about my Father. Your prayers mean the world."
