Robber's Remorse

DW staff (ls)September 26, 2008

Robbed of a good night's sleep on account of guilt pangs, a thief in Germany returned to the scene of the crime to deliver a note of apology and pay compensation to his burglary victims.

Police said a kiosk in Kamen, near the western German town of Unna, North-Rhine Westphalia, was broken into last weekend and looted of cigarettes and alcohol totaling 4,300 euros ($6,270).

But as it turns out, the robber was racked with remorse over the next few days, which may have had something to do with the large quantities of mood-altering substances he had in his possession.

When staff arrived for work on Thursday they were surprised to discover an envelope containing 400 euros and a note which read "sorry -- to make up for Saturday night!"

And they say crime doesn't pay.
