Democracies are fragile. The collapse of the Weimar Republic and rise of the Nazis teach us that democracies need safeguards. Plus: an exhibition all about air in Dresden and France celebrates its new star Zaho de Sagazan.

The collapse of the Weimar Republic led to the rise of the Nazis. Populists and right-wing extremists are gaining strength again today. We asked historians what we can learn from history.

An exhibition at the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden encourages us to draw a deep breath. Air is everywhere – and were it not, we’d die. The exhibit makes visible something easy to ignore and asks: just how important is air?

She’s skyrocketed to fame in just one year: French singer Zaho de Sagazan. The new star sang at the Cannes Film Festival and the Olympic Games in Paris. Now she’s ready to conquer the world. Her role models: Kraftwerk and Jacques Brel.
