Possible New Computer Tax

The Federal government is considering reforming the country's copyright laws by adding a tax on electronic machines such as computers and printers. Ministry of Justice Spokesman Ulf Gerder said no final decision has been made, but stated the importance of reforming the law in order to prevent piracy and protect originals and ideas. Thus far, a copyright tax has only applied to machines genuinely used for making multiple copies, such as photocopiers, scanners, MP-3-players and CD burners. And in these cases, the tax is filtered back to authors or other rights holders through collecting societies such as Gema or VG Wort.
