Non-profit groups are increasingly turning to social media to stay in touch with the public - and elicit donations.

Non-profit groups should stop seeing social media only as a way to get money from supporters and start listening to what people have to say, according to Katya Andresen, chief operating officer at Network for Good, which consults non-profit organizations.

She said organizations have to allow people to spread the word about their work in blogs, podcasts or social media networks instead of trying to keep control over their marketing messages.
