Nut Job

DW staff (dc)October 14, 2008

Who knew that hazelnuts constituted such dangerous booty? Certainly not the thieves who made off with 300 kg (600 lbs) of them in Germany.

Police in Hamburg have issued a warning to the perpetrators of the hazelnut heist not to consume any of the ill-gained goods, as the sacks containing the nuts were full of poisonous phosphate gas, Reuters news agency has reported.

The deadly gas is used to extend the shelf life of the nuts, which have to first be treated before they're safe to munch on.

"We're looking for the perpetrators because they could face a very serious health risk if they eat these hazelnuts," police spokesman Holger Vehren said. "The gas is even lethal if they inhale it."

It may sound nuts, but it's just another example of how crime doesn't pay.
