Northern England and parts of Ireland have been hit by severe flooding after the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in Britain. +++LM REIN+++ Worst affected are the towns of Cockermouth and Workington in England's Lake District. Military helicopters rescued hundreds of people. And, a policeman was killed as torrential rain flooded homes, washed away bridges and closed roads.
