Nibali takes yellow jersey
July 6, 2014Vincenzo Nibali broke free of the pack in the final two kilometers of the race on Sunday, riding a two-second lead to victory in the trek through northern England.
"It was a fantastic day, I made a good move," said Nibali. "It was tough because there was a lot of headwind. The last 1.5 kilometers were really long."
"It will be tough to keep it until Paris but we know it is going to be hard," the Italian said.
The 29-year-old Astana team leader took the yellow jersey from the Stage 1 winner, Marcel Kittel of Giant-Shimano. The German sprinter is known for having problems with climbs, and he struggled with the nine rolling hills on the 201-kilometer (125-mile) ride from York to Sheffield on Sunday. Kittel finished 20 minutes behind in a group of sprinters.
Belgium's Greg van Avermaet came in second while Michal Kwiatkowski of Poland had to settle for third. In the overall standings, Nibali leads while Peter Sagan of Slovakia currently holds second place and van Avermaet occupies the third spot.
The first three stages of the tour are being held in England before the competition returns to France on July 8. In the third stage on Monday, the riders will cover 155 kilometers from Cambridge to London, where they will finish on the Mall not far from Big Ben and Westminster Abbey.
