Climate change is pushing Europe to rethink how it handles urban flooding. One major cause of flood risk in cities and towns is the prevalence of asphalted and concrete-covered areas. Here, the soil has little chance to absorb heavy rainfall. Swiss activists like Bettina Walch are working on innovative ways to mitigate the problem. Their favorite tools? Jackhammers. In cities like Winterthur, they get to work whenever there’s a chance to create more green and less grey.
