Mohammad Abu Bakar

Multimedia journalist covering India, with a special focus on Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh

Mohammad Abu Bakar was born and brought up in conflict. He grew up hearing stories of daily violence. The daily struggle of people inspired him to document whatever is happening.

Mohammad Abu Bakar is a journalist based in India-administered Kashmir covering conflict, human rights and political instability.

During his career, he has covered and witnessed multiple crises closely — the outbreak of the COVID pandemic and a long digital crackdown after the abrogation of Article 370 in India-administered Kashmir in 2019 and how both have had devastating effects on people.

He also reported about those who had fled their homes in Myanmar from a persecuting military.

In his reporting, Mohammad focuses on how the lack of normalcy in Kashmir impacts people's lives, including their education, health care and livelihoods.

He holds a journalism degree from the University of Kashmir.
