Lisbon in mourning as 16 people die in funicular accident

Portugal's capital is in shock after a funicular railcar accident killed at least 16 people. Many others were injured when one of Lisbon's best-known attractions, the funicular "Elevador da Gloria," derailed and crashed in a popular tourist neighborhood.

A tragic accident in Lisbon has claimed more than a dozen lives after the iconic Gloria funicular derailed and crashed into a building during rush hour. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as another tram approached. Mayor Carlos Moedas called the incident "unprecedented," with many victims in serious condition. The historic funicular, dating back to 1885, was a popular tourist attraction.
