Keeping Serbia's wolf population under control

Serbia is home to one of Europe's largest wolf populations. Hunters keep their numbers in check to protect local game and livestock.

Each February, hundreds of hunters gather in the Kopaonik mountains in southern Serbia for the wolf hunting season. 

Serbia is home to one of the largest wolf populations in Europe. Although wolves are considered useful for the ecosystem — they also prey on sick and old animals and help "clean" the forest — Serbia controls the size of the population in order to protect game and livestock.

DW joined a group of wolf hunters on a cold, snowy February day in the Serbian mountains to find out more.
