Israel orders evacuation of Gaza City ahead of new strikes

Israel's military has ordered all residents of Gaza City, in all neighborhoods, to evacuate ahead of a new planned offensive. Nearly 1 million Palestinians are sheltering in the territory's largest urban center. Israel claims that the city is the final stronghold of the militant group Hamas.

Israel is intensifying its assault on the largest urban center in Gaza, targeting high-rise buildings that it claims are being used by Hamas militants. Residents and people who have taken shelter in Gaza City have been ordered by Israel's military to evacuate — but many are trapped. "They are doing all this to displace us," one resident said. "We are unable to move."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said 50 towers had been destroyed ahead of a new Israeli ground offensive.

The United Nations warns of famine and rising civilian casualties as people flee south with what they can carry.
