'I miss eating:' Suffering and starvation in Gaza

Ralph Martin
September 1, 2025

Some children in Gaza hospitals are too weak to eat and too scared to hope for a better future. Their stories show the growing humanitarian crisis, with war, displacement and famine threatening lives every day, while tons of food is being held up at the Gaza border. WARNING: This report contains graphic images that viewers may find distressing.

Nine-year-old Maryam, now hospitalized in Gaza City for severe malnutrition, reflects on her lost childhood amid war and displacement. Her mother fears losing her at any moment.

Food is scarce, with markets selling vegetables at unaffordable prices.

Ahmed, who has died since he talked to journalists for this video, had celiac disease that requires access to gluten-free food. His health deteriorated severely under Israel's blockade of food and medicines at the border.

Both children are examples of the deepening hunger crisis in Gaza, leaving families in despair.

Israel though has flatly rejected a United Nations-backed report that declared famine in areas of Gaza earlier in August.

Editor's note: The extent of hunger in Gaza has been hard to document as reporting there has become more difficult and deadly. The material in this video was shot during August by multiple journalists as part of a journalistic collaboration of public service media who are members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
