Hunger and Poverty Growing in Asia

22/06/09June 22, 2009

The Asian Development bank says the ongoing economic slowdown is severely impacting people's lives, especially the poor. The bank estimates a three percent drop in GDP in developing countries, the region’s slowest growth since the financial crisis in late 90s.

Meanwhile the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has said that over a billion people across the globe are suffering from hunger -- which is 100 million more than last year. Most of them live in the Asia-Pacific region. The FAO says the global financial crisis, combined with high food prices, has caused the surge.
