Hundreds killed in Afghanistan earthquake

September 1, 2025

Officials say the Magnitude Six quake struck the mountainous region near the city of Jalalabad. Rescuers were struggling to reach remote areas due to rough terrain and hostile weather. Entire villages have been destroyed and it's feared the death toll could rise sharply with many people trapped under the rubble.

A powerful earthquake has devastated villages in Afghanistan's Kunar Province, leaving homes in ruins and communities cut off. Rescue efforts are hampered by mountainous terrain, with helicopters as the only lifeline. Aftershocks and damaged roads complicate evacuations. With aid dwindling since the Taliban takeover, survivors face a long road to recovery.
