How scientific innovation can help combat climate change

April 27, 2025

Flooding caused by heavy rainfall is a regular occurrence — and a consequence of climate change. Weather extremes are no longer limited to certain parts of the world: they’re now part of everyday life in Germany too.

Scientists from many fields of research are determined to combat climate change. At Kassel University in the German state of Hesse, researchers are investigating a new way of making concrete with reduced CO2 emissions. Two researchers in Giessen, a neighbouring city, accidentally invented bioplastic. What began as a forgotten petri dish is now poised to transform the region's packaging industry. All of these examples demonstrate how science is working hard to protect the climate. The film takes viewers into the laboratory and explains the significance of today's research on how we will be living our lives tomorrow.
