Fishing nets with a way out

When cod fishers haul in their nets they often find many other fish they can’t use. To reduce this unwanted bycatch researchers have developed a net with a kind of escape hatch that allows flatfish to swim away underwater.

For their designs, they examine the behavior of different kinds of fish in the nets. In the case of bottom-feeders like flatfish, they were able to build a kind of escape hatch into the net - and initial results are encouraging.
