World number one Roger Federer warmed up for Wimbledon with a 6-4 6-7 6-4 victory over Australian Open champion Marat Safin to win his third consecutive Halle Open title on Sunday. The Swiss, who is also going for a third successive title at Wimbledon this month, produced another masterly performance on grass to beat the powerful but erratic Russian. After his recent defeat in Paris Federer said he took courage from his performance in Halle.

"The victory showed that I have got over losing at Roland Garros. I am surprised about myself again, because I came here to Halle and after a few matches Im already feeling great."

American Andy Roddick was also successful this Sunday as he won a third consecutive title at the Stella Artois tournament in London with a 7-6 7-6 victory over towering Croatian Ivo Karlovic on Sunday.
Now Karlovic is a bit of a character. At 6ft 10ins he is the tallest man in professional tennis. He showed no sign of nerves but was outplayed on the big points by his more experienced opponent.

Maria Sharapova warmed up for the defence of her Wimbledon crown by defeating Jelena Jankovic in the final of the DFS Classic grasscourt tournament in Birmingham
