EU leaders rally behind Moldova's membership bid

EU leaders took part in Moldova's Independence Day celebrations in a show of support for the government's ambitions to forge closer ties with Europe ahead of parliamentary elections, where its path to the EU and away from Russia will be a key issue.

Moldova marked 34 years of independence in Chisinau with European leaders from France, Germany, and Poland attending in solidarity. As Moldova eyes EU membership amid Russian pressure, Friedrich Merz declared, "Moldova will remain independent." Emmanuel Macron echoed support, saying, "Together, we will write a new chapter." But tensions remain: officials warn of Russian hybrid warfare ahead of key elections, with fears of interference threatening Moldova’s European path.
