Dozens still missing after floods in India

Rescuers are racing to locate people still missing after devastating floods this week in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. On Tuesday, sudden torrential rain triggered a massive mudslide that buried the village of Dharali.

Flash floods triggered by a cloudburst devastated the Himalayan village of Dharali, a popular tourist and pilgrimage stop. Roads were destroyed, homes swept away, and lives lost in mere seconds. Eyewitnesses described the event as terrifying and sudden. Climate experts link the disaster to rising extreme weather events, deforestation, and land use changes — warning such incidents are becoming more frequent across India.
