Budapest Pride Parade set to draw record numbers despite ban

Many Hungarians have never taken part in the Budapest Pride march. But that could well change this year as many people — even outside the LGBTQ+ community — are angered by the government-led ban on the parade.

Zsofia Nagy has never attended the Budapest Pride parade. "I, too, was influenced by prejudice," says the 28-year-old.

But Prime Minister Viktor Orban's announcement that his government would ban the parade changed her mind. Orban claims that the event poses a threat to children.

Participants have been threatened with fines if they go ahead with the march.
Nagy now plans to join the Pride parade in Budapest on June 28 — out of defiance. And she's not alone: Her former teacher, Eva Toth-Vasarhelyi, now retired, also plans to be there.

Many Hungarians have said they will travel from abroad to support the LGBTQ+ community in their native country.

Despite the government's threats, this year's Pride festival has already begun.
