The Cerrado is burning - frequently and ferociously. Huge swathes of Brazil’s forests and savannahs have gone up in flames. With the help of German funding, firefighter teams are doing their best with state-of-the-art technology to salvage what is left of this unique region.
Every fire that’s put out helps protect the environment: The Cerrado stores enormous amounts of carbon dioxide. The International Climate Initiative - a program launched by the German Environment Ministry - is supporting fire management in the afflicted regions with 8.5 million euros.
