Borussia Dortmund

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Financial mismanagement has reduced once dominant Dortmund to an also-ran. The club has done its best to improve within its budget constraints -- but they're not called constraints for nothing.

Perhaps the most intriguing new arrival is Giovanni Federico from last year's second-division champions Karlsruhe -- he was that league's top goal-getter and its top scorer (goals plus assists). Striker Delron Buckley, who showing some of his old form, also returns from loan and could pair nicely with Alexander Frei.

Still Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has declined to go out on a limb about what Dortmund could achieve this season. That's probably a wise decision.

Coach: Thomas Doll

Acquisitions: Diego Klimowicz (Wolfsburg), Marc Ziegler (Arminia Bielefeld), Jakub Blaszczykowski (Wisla Krakau), Giovanni Federico (Karlsruhe), Delron Buckley (retunrs from loan), Mladen Petric (Basel), Robert Kovac (Juventus Turin)

Departures: Christoph Metzelder (Real Madrid), Bernd Meier (retired), Kosi Saka (Hamburg), Sören Pirson (Essen), Nuri Sahin (on loan to Feyenoord Rotterdam)
