Presidential goodbye

Nathan Morley, Nicosia, CyprusNovember 24, 2013

Cyprus's former President Glafcos Clerides was the driving force behind the country's successful EU membership bid and the only Cypriot president to receive condolences from Turkey at his death. The island bid him farewell this week.

Amid applause and shouts of respect, hundreds of ordinary Cypriots paid their last respects to the man whose statesmanship was the driving force behind the divided country's successful European membership bid. The memorial was the culmination of a three-day morning period for Clerides, who held the post of president from 1993 to 2003. Nathan Morley was at the service for Inside Europe.
