An analysis of 50 major Asian cities revealed stark differences in urban tree coverage. Four cities—Colombo, Mumbai, Yangon, and Chongqing—boast the highest number of residents living near abundant greenery, but mostly due to green suburbs rather than dense city centers. In contrast, cities like Riyadh, Karachi, Kabul, Tokyo, and Dhaka have minimal tree cover, leaving the majority of their populations exposed to extreme heat and lacking shade. Experts emphasize the critical role of trees in mitigating urban heat, especially as climate change intensifies heatwaves across South and Southeast Asia, affecting public health, livelihoods, and economic productivity.
