The authorities in Bangladesh are struggling to reach hundreds of thousands of stranded cyclone victims. Although a military and civilian relief operation is underway, many in remote areas are still without drinking water. Cyclone Aila hit south-western Bangladesh and India's West Bengal last week, killing almost 300 people. The local authorities in India are seeking more than 200 million dollars in aid from the central government to help rebuild the damaged infrastructure. While Bangladesh’s food and disaster management Minister Abdur Razzak says foreign aid is needed to deal with the devastation.
