Widespread destruction in eastern Afghanistan has left entire villages cut off after a magnitude 6 earthquake hit the region — followed now by a severe aftershock. Hospitals in Jalalabad are overwhelmed as victims arrive from three provinces.

Rescue efforts are hampered by landslides and remote terrain, with aid workers walking hours to reach survivors. The United Nations warns hundreds of thousands may be affected. Aid efforts are strained under the Taliban government, with international support sharply reduced.
