A long-awaited apology in Ireland

The Magdalene Laundries were run by the Catholic Church in Ireland. Between 1922 and 1996, some 30,000 women and girls were forced to work in them. Two weeks ago, the Irish government admitted the role of the state in the forced labour, but this week, for the first time, Prime Minister Enda Kenny went further, issuing a formal apology in the Irish parliament.
